About the Volkswagen Golf II GTI 16V

    Chassis

The MB-01 chassis is nothing short of versatile and gives the user different options to choose from. The compact 2WD chassis can be assembled with your choice of wheelbase lengths; Short (210mm), Middle (225mm), or keep it Long (239mm) as depicted in the photos and on the box. Without removing the battery pack, motor, and other equipment setups from the center frame, you can change the attachment directions of the final gears and steering linkage to switch between front or rear wheel drive, where low or high motor mounting positions are available for rear wheel drive cars.

    Suspension

The four-wheel double wishbone suspension features a symmetrical structure and friction dampers. Double wishbone suspension allows each wheel to act and react independently from the others, offering precision handling when tackling those hard-to-maneuver courses. Sections such as the motor mount, final gears, and suspension are unitized and facilitate ease of assembly and maintenance.

    Body

The body included in this kit is clear, unpainted, and uncut, which allows for some personalized touches during the painting process. This assembly kit comes with multiple decal sheets that decals used on the Volkswagen Golf II GTI 16V. The polycarbonate body also incorporates beautifully captured body lines to recreate the stunning style of the original car.

Now what I mean by this is the detail on the body is second to none. If you owned the real car or even the Rabbit you’ll understand the quality that this body brings. The rally car is also a great deal but this is a real gem! And the price is awesome! I run the m02,m04,and m06-all rear wheel drive. So I’m finally going to try front wheel drive but check this out if I don’t like that,I can do this in rear wheel drive! All in 1 kit! Also people complain about the “slop” in the MB01. Well if you’re a builder or just starting out pay attention watch YouTube videos. You only need some shims. Traxxas 1985 shims are perfect for this kit get them here or anywhere you can. Full metal bearings and tamiya CVA shocks and your golden! This car is classic and won’t disappoint. Great build. This won’t be the only one I buy, feels like my first M02 from back in 98(still running),and I’m sure this is going to be just as much fun as that was! Mike Verified Owner Monday, Aug 4 2025 (8 weeks ago) Tamiya Volkswagen Golf II GTI 16V Electric 1/10 FWD/RWD On-Road Kit (MB-01) This is a great kit from Tamiya. This body in particular is amazing. The build is very easy with same screws for most of the assembly (with countersunk screws or different sizes only where needed). The chassis has some great quality of life improvements over the older M-05 chassis such as easy access to the battery. A single large pin and the battery slides off from either side of the chassis (vs two cumbersome mini pins on the M-05 which almost needed pliers to remove). Second is the motor and diff access. Super easy to take out and super simple design. And third, you get set screws to set the droop. It’s mechanically extremely simple, although it needs an unusually large pinion gear. The ESC it comes with is perfect for the stock silver can. It feels faster and smoother than the M-05 on a straight line (check toe in and out if jittery). On turns its got torque steer but can be remedied with thick grease on the diff. The tires are actually a softer compound and they hook up to tile decently.
Now the body is amazing, It’s a little bigger than I expected using the full length of the chassis (Long configuration). The addition of light buckets is great. I wish it had the double lights as seen in some GTI versions. The bumpers are nice and give a realistic touch. Rims look great. The sticker sheet took more time than the actual chassis build because there was so much detail, and it was not pre-cut.
Overall it’s a neat little kit. Only minor gripes I have are the plastic diff gears (unsure if metal ones are really needed) and the vinyl sticker sheet was not pre-cut. You need some fine scissors to cut long straight body lines. Finally there has been concerns online about suspension pivot balls popping off. I did not have this experience but you can install upgraded TAM54559. Only need 4 for the bottom. Make sure they “pop” in place. Finally get the ball bearings for this kit.
Super fun, and am considering getting the BT-01 sister chassis for some experimentation. (4w drive + 4w steering wink wink). View all reviews
